RIDING A DEAD HORSE
Riding that horse
⠀ as far as it would go
plodding through Death Valley
⠀ ⠀ like a lost cowboy
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ in a grainy black and white western
bones bleaching in the sun
⠀ ⠀ half buried by the swirling sands
Ronald Reagan narrating in the background.
Sixty years wandering
⠀ through the arid wasteland
⠀ ⠀ on a horse that was already dead
sunburned skin
⠀ blistering in the flare of the sun
searching for the watering hole
⠀⠀ that would quench
⠀ ⠀⠀ my dry, parched soul.
That horse should have
⠀ been put out of its misery long ago
⠀ ⠀ laid to rest in a holy sepulchre
revered for carry me so long
⠀ until finding the silver stallion
⠀ ⠀ vanquishing the evil doers
riding off into the sunset
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ with a hearty hi yo, silver.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀escurrida y sedienta
Ese caballo debió salir
⠀de su miseria desde hace mucho tiempo
⠀⠀⠀enterrado en un santo sepulcro
y venerado por llevarme lejos tanto tiempo
⠀⠀hasta encontrar el semental plateado
⠀⠀⠀que venció a los malhechores
cabalgando hacia el ocaso
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀con un amable ¡Hey, tú, plateado!
THE SILENCE FINDS ITS WAY TO ME
The silence finds its way to me
⠀ as the wrinkled man
⠀ ⠀ beaten and withdrawn
sits on the worn park bench
⠀ fountains smiling in his head
Pulling a scarf of quietude around me
⠀ ⠀ I dream beyond the
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ boundaries of my imagination
and like Chinese demons
⠀ travel on a straight line
toward smiles of delicious pleasure
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ silky desire
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ heats my soul.
HOPE
Stepping into the elevator,
not caring whether it’s going up or down,
a pimple on the face of the earth
to be squeezed until it bursts,
invisible to the other passengers,
⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ the society woman staring silently ahead,
⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ the bucktoothed boy in uniform
⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ absently twisting his dog tags around his fingers,
⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ the business-suited man talking boldly into what seems to be space
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀until noticing the ear buds growing out of his head,
the operator a beautiful devil
guiding us past interesting stops on our way
to the outskirts of hell.
Living in this pandemic ravaged world
is like standing alone in our hopes and dreams
or being an ominous distracted mourner at our own funeral,
taking a vow of emotional poverty,
knowing deep down that we cannot treat
the wounds of this tortured world,
beauty and kindness buried under so much shit.
White capped surges,
birthed deep at sea
massage gritty shores,
a faery light quiver
in distant forest shadows,
hope is more than wishful thinking
it is both safe and uncomfortable,
calling us outside of ourselves
to live with reckless abandon,
hope is freedom
stripping us of our fears
like discarding our dirty clothes
to dance naked with God.
ESPERANZA
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ distraído, torciendo su placa de identificación con los dedos;
para vivir con temerario abandono;
la esperanza es libertad
que nos despoja de los miedos
como cuando arrojamos nuestra ropa sucia
para bailar desnudos con Dios.
MARY’S SONG
“My soul magnifies the Lord,”
Mary sings,
of the lowliness of servants
bringing down the powerful
⠀ and the proud,
leaving the rich empty,
lifting the lowly,
giving voice to the voiceless
visibility to the invisible,
mercy to
the hungry, trannies and gays,
⠀ good things to
⠀ the wonderers and strays
wisdom to the foolish,
modesty to the arrogant
⠀ humility to the snobbish,
all generations will
call us blessed.
CANCIÓN DE MARÍA
“Mi alma alaba al Señor,
María canta,
Por la humildad de los siervos
derrocando al poderoso
⠀ y al orgulloso,
dejando al rico vacío,
levantando a los humildes,
dando voz a los silenciados,
visibilidad al invisible,
misericordia
para el hambriento, el transexual, el marica,
⠀ bendiciones para
⠀ los forasteros y extraviados,
sabiduría para el necio,
modestia para el arrogante,
⠀ sencillez para los presuntuosos.
Todas las generaciones
nos llamaran bienaventurados.
A MOMENT IN AN EXPANSE OF TIME
a wink of the eye
a nod of the head
a beat of the heart
a muttered prayer
the shot of a gun
a twinkling star
a single snowflake
a crashing wave
a promising sunrise
the regret of sunset
a life lived
⠀ like a scrap of paper
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ in the wind
UN MOMENTO EN UNA EXPANSIÓN DE TIEMPO
el guiño de un ojo
el movimiento de la cabeza
el latido del corazón
la silenciada oración
el disparo de una pistola
la estrella centelleante
el solitario copo de nieve
la ola rompiendo
el prometedor amanecer
el arrepentimiento del ocaso
una vida vivida
⠀ ⠀como un trozo de papel
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀en el viento
