LITTLE WHITE FLOWERS
A tempest, a tunnel, a funeral of stars, a song that never repeats or reveals itself; a half sister with golden hair and a thin scar on her upper lip most people never notice;
We travel like that, like little white flowers or a young girl carrying a basket in the palm of her hand, prettier than a handshake, easily bruised;
Like a field of little white flowers, we travel like that;
A meadow that has never been touched by man or harvested for nectar by bees, peaceful as snow;
We are smart little soldiers with red epaulets in a field of green,
We are the diacritical marks that day gives accent to itself with, when breezes fall from the mindless blue sky;
We travel like that, young and beautiful, in richness and even in poverty, even in a world of unkindness and too much government or not enough of it,
In war in blindness in every kind of desolation of the heart,
Even when Kali the Great Disruptor chews up everything in her path, taking care of her Kali business,
We the stifled, we the obscure, we the oppressed consonants of stars,
Resilient, immune, we travel right through it, this thing you call life,
So fine, so perfect, we would never ever think to raise the white flag.
PEQUEÑAS FLORES BLANCAS
Una tempestad, un túnel, un funeral de estrellas, un canto que nunca se repite ni se revela; una media hermana con cabello dorado y una fina cicatriz en el labio superior que casi nadie advierte.
Viajamos así, como florecitas blancas o una niña que lleva una cesta en la mano, más bonita que un apretón de manos, y que se lastima con facilidad;
Viajamos así, jóvenes y hermosos, en la riqueza y en la pobreza, en un mundo de crueldad y con demasiado gobierno o falta de él;
resilientes, inmunes, viajamos a través de esto, esto que tú llamas vida;
tan fina, tan perfecta, que jamás se nos ocurriría izar una bandera blanca.
LIKE A SPARROW DOUBTS THE RAIN
if our ears could not distinguish
the pistol from the hand
we would never know
the trajectory of pain.
if our eyes could not agree
on distances, we would
never know how far
the tiger is from our door.
these are our circumstances.
you are a woman. i am a man.
we doubt each other all day long,
like a sparrow doubts the rain.
sometimes my hands reach out
to touch you like a nation at war
with itself. other than that, you and i
agree about pretty much everything.
that makes us useful to each other.
UN GORRIÓN SOSPECHA DE LA LLUVIA
Si nuestros oídos
no pudieran distinguir
la pistola de la mano
nunca sabríamos
la trayectoria del dolor
Si nuestros ojos no lograran
ponerse de acuerdo
en las distancias
nunca sabríamos a qué distancia
está el tigre de nuestra puerta
Estas son nuestras circunstancias
tú eres una mujer
yo soy un hombre
Sospechamos
el uno del otro todo el día
como un gorrión
sospecha de la lluvia
A veces mis manos se extienden
para tocarte como a una nación
en guerra consigo misma
Aparte de eso
tú y yo estamos de acuerdo
en casi todo
Eso nos conviene a los dos
CALIFORNIA
full moon down: california never
sang so sweet, so dark, so pretty, so
raw as this, before the europeans
came: below the ranch house & tele-
phone wires, deep in the dry gulch,
among sagebrush & eucalyptus, where
the wine grapes grow purple & thick in
my neighbors’ secret vines & rattlesnakes
run free, momma coyote is singing her
brilliant kill song, to six hungry children
under a heedless canopy of stars
CALIFORNIA
luna llena al fondo: California nunca
cantó tan dulce, tan oscura, tan bella
tan cruda como ahora, antes de que
llegaran los europeos: debajo de la casa
del rancho, con los cables telefónicos
en lo hondo de la seca quebrada
entre la artemisa y el eucalipto
donde el vino, las uvas crecen moradas
en las gruesas y secretas enredaderas
de mis vecinos, donde las serpientes
de cascabel corren libres y canta mamá
coyote su brillante canción de matar
A BUTTERFLY ON A GRINDING WHEEL SHOWS NO REMORSE
a butterfly in a field of flowers
knows the lily from the lamb;
a butterfly in a pigsty still flexes
its wings, acts the part of a flower;
a butterfly on a grinding wheel
breaches no rebellion nor shows remorse;
a butterfly in barley knows which way
said the butterfly to the corn:
beware the acts of men & their machines
i know the right moment to land
and the right moment to fly;
in harvest time a butterfly
knows sunlight from a sickle
& the intoxicating hum of harvesters
on the green green horizon
UNA MARIPOSA EN LA RUEDA DEL MOLINO
Una mariposa en un
campo de flores distingue
el lirio del cordero
Una mariposa en una pocilga
todavía flexiona sus alas
actúa como una flor
Una mariposa en una rueda
abrasiva no se rebela
ni muestra remordimiento
Una mariposa entre la cebada
sabe en qué dirección
sopla el viento y por qué
Dijo la mariposa al maíz:
cuidado con los actos
de los hombres y sus máquinas
Yo conozco mis derechos:
el derecho a volar
y el derecho a aterrizar
En tiempo de cosecha
una mariposa conoce el destello
del sol en una hoz y
el embriagante zumbido
de la segadora
en el horizonte verde
NO MAN’S LAND
You tear down
our palm trees
you overturn our cars
you rain clusterbombs
on our weddings
defoliate our hills
you occupy our cities
spill like oil over the
low country, desecrate
the olive groves;
you climb like dragonflies
on titanium wings
kill the hospitals
kill the orphanages;
spy on the
kitchen gods
defenestrate
the winepress
blacken whole cities
with your unholy
kill teams and
holybooks; you
undermine
the citadels of
the common man
with your long range
lies and capitalism;
yes you with your
hotwire howitzers
yes you with your
profits and losses
and highway engineers;
you bulldoze the planet
you asphalt the moon
you ride drunk as a
cameldriver
through
souks
climb
ass high
to a helicopter
weep like
a crocodile
in the gardens
of Jerusalem;
Baghdad
Basra
Gaza
the poppy fields of La Mohammad Kalay
Boom! Boom! Boom!
No avail!
No avail!
all the bombs
in all your arsenals
will do you
no good:
this land
you occupy
is no man’s land
it belongs to all men
or to none at all;
call us resistance
call us terrorists
call us late for the
surrender parade
we will retreat
into the infinite country
we will return
with the burning Nile
TIERRA DE NADIE
Derribas nuestras palmeras
tumbas nuestros autos
llueves racimos de bombas
en nuestras bodas
desforestas nuestros cerros
ocupas nuestras ciudades;
te derramas como petróleo
sobre las tierras bajas
profanas los olivares
trepas como las libélulas
con alas de titanio
destruyes los hospitales
destruyes los orfanatos;
espías a los dioses de la cocina
defenestras el lagar
ennegreces ciudades enteras
con tus impíos equipos de
asesinos y sus libros sagrados
socavas las ciudadelas
del hombre común
con tu largo alcance
tus mentiras y capitalismo;
sí, tú con tus obuses hotwire
tú con tus ganancias y perdidas
e ingenieros de carreteras
arrasas con el planeta
asfaltas la luna;
cabalgas borracho como
un camellero por los zocos
subes con tu alto trasero
a un helicóptero y lloras
como un cocodrilo en
los jardines de Jerusalén
Bagdad
Basora
Gaza
en los campos de amapolas
de La Mohammad Kalay
¡Bum! ¡Bum! ¡Bum!
¡Sin resultado!
¡Sin resultado!
Todas las bombas de
todos tus arsenales
de nada te servirán:
esta tierra que ocupas
es tierra de nadie
pertenece a todos los
hombres o a ninguno;
llámanos resistencia
llámanos terroristas
llámanos tarde para el
desfile de rendición
nos retiraremos
al país infinito
volveremos en
el Nilo ardiente
HOW THE TROUBLES CAME
there was a wee little girl
with eyes like rain
who never shed a tear
no not for nobody
and what’s wrong with that?
she was pretty
with strong hands
and a healthy appetite
sitting there on a 3 legged chair
milking a cow named Molly
(big as the entire
western world)
and it was all quite pleasant
it was the olden days
not a cloud in the sky
til a feline who lived in the hay
and hunted mice
quite by accident
or sense of cats play
reached up and tore
a great big hole
in the universe
and then the troubles came
buckets of ‘em,
pouring out
and where was the little girl, then,
with her eyes like rain?
CÓMO LLEGARON LOS PROBLEMAS
había una vez una niñita
con ojos de lluvia
que nunca derramo
una lagrima por nadie
¿y qué tenía de malo?
ella era linda
y con manos fuertes
saludable apetito
se sentaba en una silla
de 3 patas a ordeñar
una vaca llamada Molly
(tan grande como todo
el mundo occidental)
todo fue bastante agradable
eran los viejos tiempos
ni una nube en el cielo
hasta que un felino
que vivía entre el heno
y cazaba ratones
por accidente o por
el sentido del juego
de los gatos, se estiró
y abrió un gran agujero
en el universo, y los
problemas se vinieron
a cántaros, se derramaron
y, entonces ¿a dónde fue
a parar la niña con
sus ojos de lluvia?
